Fundador alemán de la agencia de noticias
Reuters. Se desempeñó como empleado de un banco y socio de una pequeña empresa editorial antes de comenzar a ofrecer un servicio de noticias prototipo en París en 1849. Este funcionaba por medio de una red de telegrafía eléctrica y palomas mensajeras. Se trasladó a Inglaterra en 1851 y abrió allí una oficina de telégrafos que ofrecía sus servicios a bancos, casas de corretaje y a las principales empresas financieras. Siguió expandiendo gradualmente su servicio de noticias. En 1958, captó como cliente al primer periódico que se suscribiría a sus servicios. Cables submarinos le permitieron ampliar su servicio a otros continentes.
